Because the first female farm worker in America to be hired and then elected as a union organizer by her fellow Mexican-American, Filipino, Black, and Okie farmworkers. Born to an orphan of the Mexican Revolution and Mescalero Apache, Maria was Mexican American, Indigenous and a U.S. Citizen.
